The textile journey of Liyuan Dai (Li) began when his mom taught him hand stitching to mend a shirt. Working-class people’s frugality lies in Li’s personality, leading repurposing to become one of his main practices.
Li’s approach of using readymade fabrics evolved into creating his own textiles. With a background in philosophy and art history, Li is dedicated to addressing social justice issues by incorporating critical theories into his works.
Guided by his motto of “repetition brings beauty”, Li is enthusiastic about using simplistic and recurrent structures to explore the relationship amongst subtlety, sensory faculties, and philosophical concepts. He is keen on how nuances of textiles can tell stories themselves.
